RESUMO

A deep insight into surface structural evolution of the catalyst is a challenging issue to reveal the structure-activity relationship. In this contribution, based on a surface alloying strategy, the dual-functional Pd@NiPd catalyst with a unique core-shell hierarchical structure is developed through selective crystal growth, surface cocrystallization, directional self-assembly, and reduction process. The surface defects are created in situ on the outer NiPd alloy layer in the electrochemical redox processes, which endow the Pd@NiPd catalyst with excellent electrocatalytic activity of hydrogen generation reaction (HER) and oxygen generation reaction (OER) in alkaline media. The optimal Pd@NiPd-2 catalyst requires an overpotential of only 18 mV that is far lower than Pt/C benchmark (43 mV) at the current density of 10 mA cm-2 for the HER, and 210 mV that is far lower than RuO2 benchmark (430 mV) at 50 mA cm-2 for the OER. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the outstanding electrocatalytic activity is originated from the creation of surface defect structure that induces a significant reduction in the adsorption and dissociation energy barriers of H2O molecules in the HER and a decrease in the conversion energy from O* to OOH* that resulted from the synergy of two adjacent Pd sites by forming O-bridge. This work affords a typical paradigm for exploiting efficient catalysts and investigating the dependence of electrocatalytic activity on the surface structural evolution.

RESUMO

Lipid metabolic disorders, oxidative stress and inflammation in the liver are key steps in the progression of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Ophiopogonin D (OP-D), the main active ingredient of Ophiopogon japonicus, exhibits several pharmacological activities such as antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. Therefore, the current study aimed to explore the role of OP-D in NAFLD in a high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity mouse model. To investigate the effect of OP-D on NAFLD in vivo, a NAFLD mouse model was established following feeding mice with HFD, then the mice were randomly treated with HFD or HFD + OP-D for 4 weeks. Subsequently, primary mouse hepatocytes were isolated, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, reverse transcription-quantitative PCR western blotting and immunofluorescence analysis were used for assessment to explore the direct effect of OP-D in vitro. The results of the present study indicated that OP-D could ameliorate NAFLD in HFD-induced obese mice by regulating lipid metabolism and antioxidant and anti-inflammatory responses. Additionally, OP-D treatment decreased lipogenesis and inflammation levels in vitro, suggesting that the NF-κB signaling pathway may be involved in the beneficial effects of OP-D on NAFLD.

RESUMO

Acupuncture treatment is based on acupoint stimulation; however, the biological basis is not understood. We stimulated one acupoint with catgut embedding for 8 weeks and then used isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantitation to screen proteins with altered expression in adjacent acupoints of Sprague Dawley rats. We found that kininogen expression was significantly upregulated in the stimulated and the nonstimulated adjacent acupoints along the same meridian. The enhanced kininogen expression was meridian dependent and was most apparent among small vessels in the subcutaneous layer. Enhanced signals of nitric oxide synthases, cGMP-dependent protein kinase, and myosin light chain were also observed at the nonstimulated adjacent acupoints along the same meridian. These findings uncover biological changes at acupoints and suggest the critical role of the kininogen-nitric oxide signaling pathway in acupoint activation.

RESUMO

Microbial mineralization of organic phosphorus is an important component of marine phosphorus cycle. The research on organic phosphate-mineralizing bacteria (OPB) is helpful to reveal microbial driving mechanism of organic phosphorus mineralization in eutrophic sea area. The diversity and community characteristics of OPB were examined by Illumina high-throughput sequencing using the primer sets phoX in the sea area between Minjiang Estuary to Pingtan in April (spring) and July (summer) 2019. The results showed that the Shannon index of OPB in the surface seawater samples ranged from 3.21 to 7.91, and that the diversity at each station was greater in spring than that in summer. Shannon index of OPB in the sediment samples ranged from 2.04 to 8.70, which was greater in summer than that in spring. Shannon index of OPB in surface seawater of each station was higher than that of sediment in spring, while it was in adverse in summer. Nine phyla of OPB were detected in surface seawater, with Proteobacteria and Cyanobacteria being the most abundant. Tweleve phyla of OPB were detected in the sediments, with Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes being the most dominant. OPB community composition at the genus level showed obvious spatio-temporal variation. Leisingera, Phaeobacter, Thalassococcus, and Pseudomonas were the major genera in the seawater in spring, while Synechococcus, Halioglobus, Roseovarius, Phaeo-bacter, Sulfitobacter, and Hyphomonas were the major genera detected in summer. Leisingera, Phaeobacter, Vibrio, and Sulfitobacter were major genera in the sediment in spring, while Azospirillum, Aminobacter, Sulfurifustis, Burkholderia, and Thiohalobacter were the major genera in summer. A large number of unclassified OPB were detected in both surface seawater and sediment. The redundancy analysis results showed that dissolved oxygen, water temperature, pH, dissolved inorganic nitrogen, NO2--N, and NO3--N had great influences on community distribution of OPB in the surface seawater. The abundant OPB in the surface seawater and sediment might play an important role in phosphorus cycle in this sea area.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to examine the distribution and origin of the calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP)-immunoreactive sensory nerve fibers of the cranial dura mater using immunofluorescence, three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction and retrograde tracing technique. Here, the nerve fibers and blood vessels were stained using immunofluorescence and histochemistry techniques with CGRP and fluorescent phalloidin, respectively. The spatial correlation of dural CGRP-immuoreactive nerve fibers and blood vessels were demonstrated by 3D reconstruction. Meanwhile, the origin of the CGRP-immunoreactive nerve fibers were detected by neural tracing technique with fluorogold (FG) from the area around middle meningeal artery (MMA) in the cranial dura mater to the trigeminal ganglion (TG) and cervical (C) dorsal root ganglia (DRGs). In addition, the chemical characteristics of FG-labeled neurons in the TG and DRGs were also examined together with CGRP using double immunofluorescences. Taking advantage of the transparent whole-mount sample and 3D reconstruction, it was shown that CGRP-immunoreactive nerve fibers and phalloidin-labeled arterioles run together or separately forming a dural neurovascular network in a 3D view, while the FG-labeled neurons were found in the ophthalmic, maxillary, and mandibular branches of TG, as well as the C2-3 DRGs ipsilateral to the side of tracer application in which some of FG-labeled neurons presented with CGRP-immunoreactive expression. With these approaches, we demonstrated the distributional characteristics of CGRP-immunoreactive nerve fibers around the blood vessels in the cranial dura mater, as well as the origin of these nerve fibers from TG and DRGs. From the perspective of methodology, it may provide a valuable reference for understanding the complicated neurovascular structure of the cranial dura mater under the physiological or pathological condition.

RESUMO

In this paper, the graphic representation method is used to study the multiple characteristics of heart sounds from a resting state to a state of motion based on single- and four-channel heart-sound signals. Based on the concept of integration, we explore the representation method of heart sound and blood pressure during motion. To develop a single- and four-channel heart-sound collector, we propose new concepts such as a sound-direction vector of heart sound, a motion-response curve of heart sound, the difference value, and a state-change-trend diagram. Based on the acoustic principle, the reasons for the differences between multiple-channel heart-sound signals are analyzed. Through a comparative analysis of four-channel motion and resting-heart sounds, from a resting state to a state of motion, the maximum and minimum similarity distances in the corresponding state-change-trend graphs were found to be 0.0038 and 0.0006, respectively. In addition, we provide several characteristic parameters that are both sensitive (such as heart sound amplitude, blood pressure, systolic duration, and diastolic duration) and insensitive (such as sound-direction vector, state-change-trend diagram, and difference value) to motion, thus providing a new technique for the diverse analysis of heart sounds in motion.

RESUMO

Objective To investigate the prevalence and influencing factors of intestinal protozoan infections among rural children in Henan Province. Methods A total of 104 survey sites were sampled from 35 counties (cities) in Henan Province using the stratified cluster sampling method to investigate the prevalence of intestinal protozoan infections among rural children from 2014 to 2015. The trophozoites and cysts of intestinal protozoa were identified using the iodine staining method and the physiological saline direct smear method (one detection for one stool sample). The prevalence of intestinal protozoan infections was compared among rural children with different characteristics, and the factors affecting intestinal protozoan infections among rural children were identified. Results The overall prevalence of intestinal protozoan infections was 0.60% (40/6 771) among rural children in Henan Province from 2014 to 2015. There were 7 species of intestinal protozoa identified, and there was no species-specific prevalence (χ2 = 37.732, P = 0.000). No significant differences were found in prevalence of intestinal protozoan infections among rural children in terms of gender (χ2 = 1.793, P = 0.181), age (χ2 = 1.443, P = 0.486), occupation (χ2 = 0.219, P = 0.896) or ecological region (χ2 = 1.700, P = 0.637). In addition, terrain (χ2 = 2.311, P = 0.510), economic level (χ2 = 4.322, P = 0.229), source of drinking water (χ2 = 0.731, P = 0.393), eating raw vegetables (χ2 = 1.134, P = 0.287) and deworming (χ2 = 1.089, P = 0.297) had no remarkable effects on the prevalence of intestinal protozoan infections among rural children in Henan Province; however, the prevalence of intestinal protozoan infections varied significantly among rural children living in regions with different coverage of non-harmless toilets (χ2 = 10.050, P = 0.018). Conclusion The prevalence of intestinal protozoan infections is low among rural children in Henan Province.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To provide a new method for investigating the histological characteristics of acupoints by obser-ving the microstructure of the lymphatic vessels in the skin tissue of "Taichong" (LR3) and "Yongquan" (KI1) regions. METHODS: Six male SD rats were used in the present study. The skin tissue of LR3 and KI1 from the hind foot were taken following transcardial perfusion with 4% paraformaldehyde. The skin tissues were cut into sagittal sections with a freezing microtome and stained by fluorescent immunohistochemistry with lymphatic vessel endothelial hyaluronan receptor 1 (LYVE-1), calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), and phalloidin for displaying the lymphatic vessels, nerve fibers, and blood vessels, separately. The samples were viewed and recorded using fluorescent microscope and laser scanning confocal microscope. RESULTS: In the skin tissue of LR3 and KI1 regions, the lymphatic vessels, nerve fibers, and blood vessels were labeled with LYVE-1, CGRP and phalloidin, respectively. The lymphatic capillaries were found to start from the enlarged blind end and distribute in the dermis and subcutaneous tissues with various forms, crisscrossing. Abundant blood capillaries at various thickness distributed around the lymphatic capillaries in a parallel or crossed pattern, intermingled with free nerve fibers. CONCLUSION: The lymphatic capillaries, blood capillaries and nerve fibers extensively distribute in the skin tissues of LR3 and KI1 regions in rats, suggesting an involvement of the immunomodulation in the effects of acupuncture in pathological conditions, despite being not limited to the acupoint regions in the distribution of lymphatic capillaries.

RESUMO

The neurovascular structures in the cranial dura mater have been studied with various histological techniques in the past years. In order to obtain a proper approach to reveal the detailed structures, different labeling methods for the cranial vessels and nerve fibers were tested in this study. Firstly, the labeling characteristics of phalloidin, alpha smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), and CD31 were compared in rat whole-mount cranial dura mater by using fluorescent immunohistochemistry or histochemistry. Secondly, according to their properties, phalloidin and α-SMA were selected to combine with calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) to further demonstrate the cranial neurovascular structure. By these approaches, a three-dimensional map of blood vessels and nerve fibers within the whole-mount rat cranial dura mater was obtained. The results showed that phalloidin, α-SMA, and CD31 were preferably expressed in the wall of cranial vessels, corresponding to the arteriors, venules, and capillaries, respectively. Additionally, CGRP + nerve fibers were clearly demonstrated together with phalloidin + or α-SMA + vessels, forming a delicate neurovascular network in the cranial dura mater. The thick nerve bundles ran closely to the phalloidin + or α-SMA + vessels in parallel pattern, while the thin nerve fibers branched off from the bundles tending to surround the phalloidin + arterioles rather than α-SMA + venules. These findings suggest that phalloidin could be an appropriate biochemical maker to be effectively used together with CGRP for experiments examining the detailed spatial correlation of cranial blood vessels and nerve fibers in a three-dimensional view, which may provide clues for understanding the underlying mechanisms of cranial neurovascular disorders.

RESUMO

While the recent study on the compassionate use of remdesivir for COVID-19 patients has shown a 68% clinical improvement7 it is a one-arm study that renders the evaluation of the efficacy in reducing death and the length of stay of hospitalization intractable due to a lacking of the control group. We came up with a two-arm controlled study design to simulate the treated and the untreated (control group) group by applying two respective transition models to the empirical data on dynamics of the disease severity (Figure 2 of the original article7) that are classified into low- (no and low oxygen supplement), medium- (non-invasive ventilator and high oxygen supplement), and high-(ECMO and invasive ventilator) from enrolment until discharge, death or the end of follow-up. By using a simulated two-arm controlled study, the remdesivir treatment group as opposed to the control group led to a statistically significantly 29% (95% CI: 22-35%) reduction of death from COVID-19. The treated group also revealed a 33% (95% CI 28-38%) significantly higher odds of discharge than the control group. The median time to discharge for the treated group (5.5 days, 16.5 days, and 29.5 days for low-, medium-, and high-risk state, respectively) was around half of those of the control arm. Our results with a simulated two-arm controlled study have not only corroborated the efficacy of remdesivir but also made great contribution to designing a further large-scale randomized controlled trial. They have significant implications for reducing transmission probability and infectious time of COVID-19 patients when contacting with susceptible health care workers during hospitalization. RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To collect literatures on the application of neural tracing technique in experimental acupuncture research, and summarize its application status in acupoints, meridians and Zang-fu organs. METHODS: We collected papers published from databases of CNKI (1979-2017), Wan-Fang (1990-2017), VIP (1989-2017) and PubMed(1997-2017)by using keywords of "neural tracing technique" "neuroanatomic tracing" "neural tracers" and "acupuncture" "electroacupuncture" "auricular acupuncture" "eye acupuncture" "meridians" "acupuncture points" "acupoint injection", and made a summary about the current state of application of neural tracing technique in the fields of acupoint, meridian and Zang-fu organs (viscera). RESULTS: A total of 94 articles were collected, the most commonly used neural tracers were horseradish peroxidase and cholera toxin subunit B. The experimental animals used were rat, rabbit, cat, monkey, etc., and injection site was acupoint. After the injection of neural tracers, the survival time of animals was range from 1 day to 12 weeks, and the labelled tissues included neurons and nerve fibers of the sensory, motor, and autonomic systems. The outcomes of neural labeling mainly revealed the segmental pattern, neuroanatomical connection (neural pathways/circuits) and chemical features (shown by immunohistochemical staining) of neurons and nerve fibers innervating both the acupoints and visceral organs, suggesting their involvement in the effect of acupuncture and moxibustion treatment. CONCLUSION: This application of neural tracing technology help us understand the under-lying mechanisms of acupuncture and moxibustion interventions from different perspectives of neural pathways/circuits and related chemical properties, which also lays a greater role for this technology in future experimental acupuncture research.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the expression of serotonin (5-HT) in local tissue of different acupoint regions at the hind limbs of rats. METHODS: A total of 6 male SD rats were used in the present study. The local tissues of "Neiting"(ST44), "Zusanli"(ST36) and "Futu"(ST32) at the hindlimbs were dissected after transcardiac perfusion with fixative solution containing 4% paraformaldehyde, phosphate buffer, etc., fixed again in 4% paraformaldehyde and cut into sections (at 20 µm thick). Then, the tissue sections were subjective into immunofluorescence stain for displaying 5-HT positive cells and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) -positive fibers, vessel-like structure (labelled with phalloidin) and cellular nucleus (labelled with DAPI), separately. After that, the tissue samples were observed and recorded using a laser confocal microscope. RESULTS: The 5-HT labeled cells presented flat or round form in the local tissues of the 3 acupoint regions. These cells were mainly located in the dermis and subcutaneous tissue, and concentrated around the vessel-like structure and CGRP-positive nerve fibers. The number of cutaneous 5-HT positive cells was most in ST44 (156.6±12.1), and fewer in ST36 (83.5±18.2)and ST32(53.3±5.2)in turn. CONCLUSION: 5-HT-positive cell is an important member in local tissue of acupoints (ST44, ST36 and ST32), and varies in number according to their locations, suggesting an involvement of different densities of 5-HT-positive cells in different levels of regulatory effects of acupuncture stimulation of these acupoints.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To explore the effect of moxa-stick moxibustion and joss-stick moxibustion at "Guanyuan" (CV4) on the activity of mast cells in the small intestine tissue in rats. METHODS: Twelve male SD rats were randomly divided into control, joss-stick moxibustion and moxa-stick moxibustion groups (n=4 rats in each group). Joss-stick or moxa-stick moxibustion was applied to CV4 for 10 min. After moxibustion, the skin temperature of the CV4 region was measured immediately with a thermometer. The mast cells and nerve fibers in the small intestine tissue were displayed by immunofluorescence histochemistry. RESULTS: Compared with the control group, the skin temperature of the CV4 region in both the joss-stick and the moxa-stick groups were significantly increased (P<0.05), while the skin temperature of the moxa-stick group was significantly higher than that in the joss-stick group (P<0.05). There were a large number of tryptase-positive mast cells in the small intestine of rats, some of which were co-expressed with lysosomal-associated membrane protein 1, displaying an activated state. The average numbers of mast cells in the control, joss-stick and moxa-stick groups were 9.2±3.6, 10.8±5.3 and 17.1±6.3, respectively, being significantly higher in the moxa-stick group than in the control and joss-stick groups (P<0.05). In addition, calcitonin gene-related peptide(CGRP) and neuropeptide Y(NPY) positive nerve fibers were found around the mast cells in the small intestinal tissues. CONCLUSION: Moxa-stick moxibustion gives rise a higher temperature at CV4 to activate mast cells surrounded by CGRP and NPY positive nerve fibers in the small intestine tissue in rats, suggesting an involvement of the sensory and sympathetic nervous system in the activation of intestinal mast cells possibly by way of somatic sympathetic reflex.

RESUMO

Polyphosphate accummulating organisms (PAOs) play an important role in the phosphorus metabolic cycling in the sediment of reservoir. We assessed the diversity and community structure of PAOs in the sediments by T-RFLP and clone sequencing which targeted ppk1 gene at the hearts of three reservoirs (Jiulongjiangxipi reservoir, Sanshiliujiao lake reservoir and Dongyaxi reservoir) in Fujian Province. The results showed that the diversity of PAOs varied among different reservoirs, though not statistically significant. The diversity of PAOs in the Sanshiliujiao lake reservoir was highest (Shannon index H=2.89±0.03, Simpson index D=0.06±0.01). The community structure of the PAOs in the Sanshiliujiao lake reservoir was most complicated, consistent with the results of the T-RFLP. The differences of dominant PAOs genera in three reservoirs were distinct, mainly concentrated in the Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria and Acidobacteria. The percentage of those three phylum accounted for 74.5%, 85.0% and 75.0%, respectively, of the total PAOs. The dominant groups in each reservoir sediment were Anaeromyxobacter and Solibacter. Various forms of phosphorus had certain influence on the diversity of PAOs. There were significantly correlation between Fe/Al-P and PAOs diversity and community structure. The dominant genus in the three reservoirs, Anaeromyxobacter, was positively correlated with all forms of phosphorus and significantly correlated with insoluble phosphorus such as OP and Ca-P, while Solibacter was negatively correlated with all forms of phosphorus. The results suggested that PAOs had important impacts on the phosphorus cycle of sediment in eutrophicatied reservoirs.

RESUMO

Objective To understand the epidemic status and influencing factors of intestinal parasitic diseases among rural children in Henan Province. Methods According to the Scheme for The National Survey on Current Status of Major Human Parasitic Diseases in China, the survey counties were selected based on the ecological zones and economic levels in Henan Province between 2014 and 2015. Then, the included counties were stratified according to the topography and economic levels. A township was randomly sampled from each stratum, and a village was randomly sampled from each township as the study site. Finally, a total of 104 study sites from 35 counties were enrolled for the survey of intestinal parasitic diseases in children. At least 250 fresh stool samples were collected from each study site for detection of intestinal helminth eggs with the Kato-Katz technique, for the identification of Necator americanus and Ancylostoma duodenale with the fecal culture method, and for the detection of intestinal protozoa trophozoite and cyst with the physiological saline smear and iodine staining techniques. In addition, the Enterobius vermicularis and tapeworm eggs were detected in children aged 3 to 6 years using the adhesive cellophane-tape perianal swab method. Results The overall prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections was 3.21% (214/6 671) among rural children in Henan Province, and the prevalence of intestinal helminthes (2.62%, 175/6 671) was higher than that of intestinal protozoa (0.60%, 40/6 671). A total of 12 species of intestinal parasites were found, including 4 nematodes species, one trematode species, and 7 protozoa species, and the highest infection was seen in E. vermicularis (2.47%, 161/6 671). Among the four ecological zones in Henan Province, the greatest prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections was detected among children in the Qinba Mountain Ecological Zone (5.85%, 90/1 538). There was no gender-specific difference in the prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections in children (P > 0.05); however, there were age- (χ2 = 32.762, P < 0.05) and education level-specific differences in the prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections in children (χ2 = 67.507, P < 0.05), with the greatest prevalence of E. vermicularis infection seen in all species of intestinal parasites in children at all age groups. Multivariate non-conditional logistic regression analysis showed that high education level, high coverage of harmless toilets, drinking tap water and deworming were protective factors for intestinal parasitic infections in children in Henan Province. The overall prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections appeared a tendency towards a gradual decline among children in Henan Province as compared to the previous two surveys. Conclusions The overall prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections shows a tendency towards a remarkable decline among children in Henan Province. E. vermicularis infection should be given a priority for future parasitic disease control activities among rural children in Henan Province.

RESUMO

Objective@#To explore the protective effect of Yishen Tongluo Recipe (YTR) against aberrant sperm DNA methylation in male rats exposed to benzo(a)pyrene (BaP).@*METHODS@#Thirty male SD rats of the SPF grade were randomly divided into three groups of equal number: solvent control, BaP exposure and YTR intervention. The animals of the solvent control group were injected intraperitoneally with 0.5% DMSO while those of the other two groups with BaP at 0.1 mg/kg/d, all for 60 days, and at 31 days of BaP exposure, those of the YTR group were treated intragastrically with YTR for 30 days. Then, the left epididymides were harvested from all the rats and sperm suspensions collected and centrifuged for extraction of sperm DNA. The methylated DNA immunoprecipitation sequencing (MeDIP-seq) technique was used to detect the whole-genome DNA methylation in different groups.@*RESULTS@#Exposure to BaP induced the up-regulation of 828 genes encoding mRNA in the sperm DNA, while YTR intervention produced a significant protective effect on the transforming growth factor β3 (TGF-β3), cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) and recombination activating gene 1 (RAG1), and down-regulated the expressions of 3 227 genes. BaP exposure also caused the up-regulation of 783 genes encoding lncRNA in the sperm DNA, and YTR treatment exhibited an evident protective effect on 62 of the up-regulated genes, induced the down-regulation of 3 378 genes, and showed a protective effect on 56 of the down-regulated genes.@*CONCLUSIONS@#YTR has a protective effect against aberrant sperm DNA methylation in male rats exposed to BaP, which may be associated with lncRNA.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To explore the neuroanatomical basis of acupoint-visceral correlation by studying the distribution of the neurons associated with acupoint "Shenshu" (BL 23) area and adrenal gland in rats. METHODS: AF 488-CTB and AF 594-CTB were injected into the left side of BL 23 area and adrenal gland in the same rat respectively. Three days after injection, the dorsal root ganglions (DRG), sympathetic chain, and spinal cord were dissected out from the perfused rats. The neuronal labeling with AF 488/594-CTB was directly observed on the sections under a fluorescent microscope or a laser scanning confocal microscope. RESULTS: All neural labeling was observed in the injection side. The sensory neurons associated with both acupoint BL 23 and adrenal gland distributed from thoracic (T) 10 to lumbar (L) 2 DRG with high concentration in T 12-T 13 and T 11-T 12, respectively, in which some of them were simultaneously labeled with both AF 488/594-CTB and located in T 12-L 1 DRG. For the sympathetic innervation, the postganglionic neurons correlated with BL 23 and adrenal gland were labeled with AF 488/594-CTB separately in the sympathetic chain at the lumbar segments, while the labeled preganglionic neurons were only observed at the lateral horn of T 11-T 13 spinal segments in the cases of adrenal gland. In addition, the labeled motor neurons were mainly detected in the spinal ventral horn at cervical (C) 7-C 8 and T 11-L 1 segments. CONCLUSION: These results indicate that there are segmental correlation between BL 23 and adrenal gland on the sensory and sympathetic innervations, and this correlation might be a neural pathway for modulating the function role of adrenal gland through BL 23 needling.
